The Penguin & Orange Readers' Group Prize

Edinburgh student wins the 2009 Penguin Orange Readers’ Group Prize

Edinburgh student, Jen Campbell, has won the 2009 Penguin Orange Readers’ Group Prize. As part of her prize she will receive a cheque for £1,000 and a pair of tickets to the Orange Prize for Fiction 2009 awards ceremony in London on 3rd June. Jen Campbell recently finished her English Literature degree at Edinburgh University, where she ran her online book forum with over 100 topics for discussion. It proved so popular that she launched the Book Club and Obsessive Book Club in August 2008. There are now over 5,000 international members with a broad age range from 13 – 50, hailing from Australia to Finland. The online nature of the Book Club means members are able to suggest a diverse range of books and post comments at any time. The three runners up are: Eliot Reading Group, (Liverpool), North London Reading Group, (London) and Ruskin Reading Group, Liverpool).

Now in its eighth year, the prize forms part of Orange's portfolio of literary partnerships. Entrants to the competition were asked to demonstrate how they made reading social and submissions were made via the online book community www.spinebreakers.co.uk.

The Penguin & Orange Readers' Group Prize

The Penguin & Orange Readers' Group Prize has changed

This year, we've opening up the field to our bookish teenagers and of course all of our regular Readers. You don't have to be a teenager to enter, you just have to be over 16 and love to talk about books. Entries are via our Spinebreakers website, so take a look and tell us about yourselves, the books you love and why 'you have to read this'!

We want to know a short history of everything; who you are, what you do, when you started, where you meet, how you stimulate discussion, how many people you are talking to and why you love to talk about books. You might have started a group on Facebook, run a book group in your college or maintain a bookish blog – whatever it is that you do to get people talking about reading, we want to know.

You can vote for your favourite Reading Group Book of the year too by clicking through here.
