In The Turn of the Screw Henry James used an unreliable narrator to great effect. Other writers who are adroit with this literary device include Vladimir Nabokov and Ford Maddox Ford. Contemporary masters of this technique include Matthew Kneale, Patrick McGrath and Barry Unsworth.
