Artistic portraits
In The Picture of Dorian Gray a painting becomes the key character in the novel. Christopher Miller’s Simon Silber portrays a biographer who hates his subject and in The Comforters, Muriel Spark depicts a heroine who knows she is a character in a book. Will Self reproduces Dorian for modern readers and in A Portrait of the Artistas a Young Man Joyce illustrates Stephen Daedelus who pursues life as an artist in a book that is itself a work of art.
